Arriving in Tilos I am so ill with the flu that i think the walk to the room may kill me. But the view is so stunning and the beach so inviting - I know I will get well here! 11/10/13 Painting the crystal water in Livada was lovely today. I still have the flu so a close little painting was called for. My first swim in the sea. Accommodation is a bit average with the smallest bathroom in the universe and no hot water. No cups to boil the “jug”. Breakfast was great first day but has gone down hill each day since. 12/10/13 Boats at Agios Andonis. A nice study. I am liking the underpainting method to get the clarity of the water. My pastels fell over which was sad so i did not do a second one. Lunch was whole fish - ueckhhh. Another swim and my day is done. Drinks on the rooftop bar with the girls and dinner in a great restaurant with greek dancing with Roma and Greg make it a great day in the end.

New Island - Kos. THis guy was opposite our room by the sea. He stripped down to his swimmers dived out with a snorkel and came back moments later with a squid. Then proceeded to beat it on the concrete to tenderise it. Scenes like this are quite common! At least you know it will be fresh on the menu. No painting again to day. Sightseeing throughout the ancient ruins in the back yard!! Then to the first ancient hospital in 1300BC. Still can't get my head around it. The song "Ancient of Days" is constantly in my head. WOW. The boats in Turkey are something to be seen! I cannot wait to paint them. We traveled from Kos to Bodrum for the day. Must say I prefer Greek hospitality. Don't feel particularly safe in Bodrum. But there was some great scenery on a beautiful day. Glenn haggled for leather jacket which was quite theatrical with the shop keeper throwing the money on the ground for good luck. No painting today but lots of reference material! 5/10/13 Vathi. 30 knot winds. Very refreshing! We take refuge in Vathi. After a mountainous bus trip the fiord of Vathi opened up with a quant villiage of mandarin trees and a small fishing villiage. The boats were amazing little vessels that I am sure Ted will love! The climbers have invaded the island of Kalymnos and they are everywhere. A competition is on next week with a prize pool of 15,000 euro. Phenomenal photos of them climbing cliff faces all over Kalymnos. Brave people! 04/10/13 The classic Greek window and door were the subject in Pothia today. The lane ways are picture perfect down the narrow back cobbled streets. But the light changes fast so it was quick painting today. The colours in the walls were amazing with cools and warms mingled together. I am having trouble finding the colours in the reflected light but it certainly is fun trying. Boats tomorrow! Out of the chaos tucked away at the base of Point Perry, Coolum was a lovely spot to paint. As usual, my crashing waves was where I was drawn to. Roma ventured out with her first test run of plein air painting and found a lot of colours everywhere! "Is it blue? Is it purple? I see green!" Yes it is all of those! Welcome to the world of Plein Air where you see so much more than you expect. All was calm when a small crash was heard from Anne's direction. "Oh dear!" was heard quite a few times.... Anne's box of pastels had tipped to the ground. Pastels all over the rocks, in crevices, in pieces. Always one to be positive Anne laughed as we picked them all up and found a stick we thought was a willow charcoal but, no it was only a stick. You can see how the turquoise goes so well with the colour of the rocks! Welcome to the world of Plein Air Anne! We were blessed to have some great company today with a fellow artist, Sheelagh visiting all the way from Colorado. The timing was perfect with her holidays here on the coast coinciding with our painting day! Isn't art a great way to make new friends. I look forward to going to Colarado to paint with Sheelagh and her art group. Welcome to the Sunshine Coast Sheelagh! Of course the most important part was enjoyed by all. We welcomed well earned coffee break! Welcome to Plein Crazy! I love to paint en plein air but sometimes I think I am just plein crazy! Choosing to go outside and paint with the wind, sun and rain to battle let along the ants, bugs and flies I must be crazy. But I still love it! The views on the Sunshine Coast are just stunning. Getting out there in nature to paint you not only see it better you really feel it. Hearing the birds, breathing the fresh air and the warmth of the sun. The colours are fresh and clear, the tones are so subtle you can see the slightest change. Just magic! Sharing the moment with artistic friends of like mind is the perfect way to spend a day. Thanks for a great day Anne. |
